Austin is the capital of Texas and the county seat of Travis County. It is the fourth-largest city in Texas, with an approximate population of 786,500. Austin is the economic and cultural center of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area with an overall population of 1,750,250.
Originally named ‘Waterloo, by the pioneers who settled here in the 1830’s, it was chosen to become the capital of the newly independent Republic of Texas in 1839 and renamed Austin after Stephen F. Austin who was known as the father of Texas.
Today, the city is home to a number of technology corporations and businesses, even holding the nickname “Silicon Hills” in the 1990’s. Now the city proudly claims to be “The Live Music Capital of the World” in recognition of the many live music venues throughout the city. In more recent times, locals have also adopted the slogan “Keep Austin Weird”, referring partly to the liberal lifestyles of residents, but also in a campaign to sustain smaller local businesses. Historically, Austin was known as the city of the “Violet Crown” due to the violet color across the surrounding hills after sunset. Some businesses today still use this symbolism.
