| The Michigan Funeral Directors
Association (MFDA) is located in Lancing and is the nations oldest funeral director
association, having been in operation since 1860. The MFDA represents approximately
85 percent of all the funeral homes in the state of Michigan. All
members of the MFDA are governed by their own "code of ethics". These ethics
include dealing with all customers in openly, fairly, confidentially, respectfully,
and competently. All funeral directors are required to help maintain public
confidence in the Ohio funeral industry at all times. In
Ohio state law requires embalming if the body is not buried or cremated within
48 hours after death or if the deceased had certain communicable diseases.
For the purpose of cremation, the County Medical Examiner must grant permission
first. Michigan law also states that the "next of kin" is the only person
allowed to make funeral arrangements for the deceased and that their wishes can
be different from the deceased own choices with the exception of body donations
for medical research. Next
