Utica is located in a region referred to as the Mohawk Valley in Central New York.  It is the county seat of Oneida County, with a population of around 70,000, and has been nicknamed ‘Handshake City’, ‘Renaissance City’ and ‘Second Chance City’.

The city originated at the shallowest spot for fording across the Mohawk River and was originally known as Fort Schuyler, after the Colonel who was a hero of the French and Indian War.  The old Fort grew into a village as a road connected Albany with the Great Lakes, and residents of the settlement met to decide on a new name for the village.  It is reported that the name ‘Utica’ was drawn from several suggestions, and the village was so-named after its Tunisian, and ancient Carthaginian, namesake.

After a prosperous time during the Industrial Revolution when Utica became a textile-producing hub, the machine tool industry thrived for some time before this too declined and relocated.  Like many upstate cities, Utica has witnessed a major manufacturing decline, which has impacted on its population growth and economy.  The term ‘Second Chance City’ was ascribed to Utica in recent years as it has succumbed to a population influx of immigrants, especially immigrants from war-torn nations.  As city leaders have worked to regenerate Utica, they have ascribed the nickname ‘Renaissance City’ to Utica.

Neighborhoods in Utica include: Cornhill, East Utica, West Utica, North Utica, South Utica, Lower East Side (LES), Adrian Terrace and Washington Courts.
