Advice on planning funerals and cremations in Schenectady

  • Remember, how much you care is not measured by how much you spend, when arranging a funeral or cremation in Schenectady.
  • Always compare prices.  The cost for funerals and cremations in Schenectady can be very different between funeral homes.
  • Cremations are growing in popularity as more families choose cremation over the traditional funeral.  This alone can save $1000's in funeral expenses in Schenectady.

Located in Eastern New York State in Schenectady County, and the county seat, with a population of around 62,000, Schenectady is the 9th largest city in New York.

It is in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, Albany, near a convergence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers.  In fact the name ‘Schenectady’ is derived from a Mohawk word for ‘near the pines’, and the area was originally the land of the Mohawk nation.  The Dutch first settled the city in 1661, and additional land purchased from the Mohawks, and by 1798 it was chartered as a city.

In the 19th century the city became an important transportation hub connecting the Hudson River and the Mohawk Valley to the Great Lakes.  The Erie Canal and the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad both passed through Schenectady.

The city features as part of the ‘Capital District’ – the metropolitan area of the capital.  It was once known as ‘The City that Lights and Hauls the World’ in reference to the two major businesses located there – General Electric and American Locomotive Company (ALCO).  Although GE retains some of its administrative operation in Schenectady, much of its manufacturing has now been relocated.  And despite ALCOs attempts to retain its prowess in the locomotive industry, the decline of steam locomotion eventually resulted in the closure of the Schenectady plant in 1969.

Neighborhoods in Schenectady include: Northside, Unions Street, Eastern Avenue, Stockade, Downtown, Vale and Hamilton Hill, Central State Street, Bellevue, Mount Pleasant and Woodlawn.
