McKinney is the county seat of Collin County, with an estimated population of 127,670. The city has been listed as one of the fastest-growing cities, second-fastest in 2007, and third-fastest in 2008. CNN’s Money magazine named McKinney as the fifth best place to live in the United States in 2010.
The city is one of the fastest-growing communities within the northeastern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Both the city, and the county, are named after Collin McKinney, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a congressman for the Red River District.
