Grand Prairie sits within Dallas County, Ellis County and Tarrant County. The city is a suburb of Dallas, Fort Worth and a part of the DFW Metroplex, with an approximate population of 154,000.

The first settlement at Grand Prairie was established by Alexander McRae Dechman in 1863, but when a U.S. Post Office opened in the town in 1877, the name ‘Dechman’ was mis-spelt and the name ‘Deckman’ adopted.  Further confusion resulted when the Texas and Pacific Railroad designated the area Grand Prairie (labeling the area between Dallas and Forth Worth as “the grand prairie of Texas”, so the U.S. Post Office was re-named Grand Prairie.

Incorporated as a city in 1909, Grand Prairie has had a long history associated with the defense and aviation industry.
