Denton is the county seat of Denton County, has a population of approximately 120,000, making it the eleventh-largest city in the DFW Metroplex. It is situated about 40 miles northwest of Dallas.
It is home to two state universities, and notably the largest university in North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, a historically single-sex university. This means that Denton is often characterized as a college town.
The County of Denton was formed in 1846, and the city in 1857, both were named after the militia captain and pioneer John B. Denton. Due to housing the two universities, Denton’s main economy is education as well and retail. The city is also known for its music scene, and growth in recent years has seen Denton achieve number 58 in 2006 on the “Top 100 Best Places to Live in America”.
