Now commonly referred to
as the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area, DFW or just The Metroplex, the
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan area, as designated by the US
census in 2003 is an area that encompasses 12 counties within the state
of Texas.
These counties are: Collin
County, Dallas County, Delta County, Denton County, Ellis County, Hunt
County, Johnson County, Kaufman County, Parker County, Rockwall County,
Tarrant County and Wise County.
The approximate population
of the DFW area is just under 6.5 million, making this the fourth-largest
metropolitan area in the United States. It is also one of the fastest-growing
metropolitan areas in the U.S. The area is further subdivided down
into two metropolitan divisions, that of Dallas-Plano-Irving and Fort Worth-Arlington.
The DFW Metroplex area encompasses
9,286 square miles, the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are the anchor
cities of the Metroplex, and Dallas has the highest concentration of corporate
headquarters in the United States. Aside from the huge business economy
of Dallas, the Texas farming and ranching industry is based around Fort
Worth.
The DFW Metroplex is situated
in the Texas blackland prairies region and so overlooks prairie land and
rolling hills, helping to sustain the farming and ranching industry that
has long been a significant aspect of Texan culture and economy.
