Flowers for a child's funeral

What should you consider when selecting funeral flowers for a child’s funeral?

Any death is sad, but the funeral of a child can be an especially distressing event, and floral tributes can be a great way to create a beautiful ambiance for the funeral party.

Funeral flowers can be sent to the funeral service, or sympathy flowers sent to the home of the bereaved parents and/or grandparents.

What size of floral tribute is appropriate for a child’s funeral?

Funeral flowers for a child or young person are basically similar to what floral arrangements you would send for an adult’s funeral.  What you may want to consider is that the floral tribute is representative in size.  Too large a wreath or casket spray may overshadow a small casket, so in general a floral tribute for a child should take this into account.

What color floral tribute is appropriate for a child’s funeral?

Although we often consider certain colors more befitting for funeral flowers, such as white or yellow, flowers for a child’s funeral can be a multitude of colors.  Just as we use pink and blue to distinguish gender with young children, pastel shades of pink or blue can be used to reflect the gender of the deceased child.  Pink roses or carnations are ideal for a young girl’s funeral and violets can be an ideal choice for a boy’s funeral.  It is usually advisable to stick to smaller sized flowers and not to use too much colored ribbon, so as to keep the floral tribute simplistic.

In terms of colors, the other alternative is a floral tribute that is bright and colorful.  As mentioned below a colored floral tribute designed as something important to the child, can be an ideal way to pay a floral tribute.

What design or shape of floral tribute is best for children’s funeral flowers?

It is more common for floral tributes to be designed into a shape that reflects a childhood, or if relevant, a particular interest of the child.  For example, shapes such as hearts, teddy bears and footballs are commonly used, as are angels, crosses, butterflies, animals and balloons.  In fact, most professional florists will be able to craft any bespoke floral tribute design in any shape or design, including 3D floral tributes.  Things like favorite football team shirts, and favorite cartoon characters are often seen as an ideal way to affectionately pay tribute to the passing of a child.

Is it appropriate to send a memorial item with funeral flowers to a child?

Yes, in fact, many people choose to do this and send things such as a cuddly toy teddy bear holding a floral arrangement, or a truck loaded with flowers.  If it is something that symbolizes the young person’s life, then this can be a good way to make this part of the funeral tribute.  Remember – if you are in any doubt consult the florist and/or the funeral home, who should be able to advise you on what the family feels is appropriate and if anyone else has ordered a similar floral tribute.

Balloons can even be added to a floral tribute for a child’s funeral if deemed acceptable by the family.  Balloons are recognized as synonymous with childhood, and symbolic of celebrations such as birthdays, therefore they can symbolize a celebration of a child’s life.  Again, if in doubt, consult with the funeral home who will ensure that the family’s wishes are respected.

What is appropriate to write on a sympathy note to accompany the floral tribute?

The family will be extremely upset during the period of the funeral service, and it can be an uplifting experience after the funeral to reflect on the beautiful floral tributes sent and from whom. The most important thing is to let the family know that you are thinking of them, and the answer here is to keep it simple, offer your condolences and support, but try not to be too gushing.

If you know the family, and the deceased child, well then you will probably find that you may already have a good sense of what type of floral funeral tribute they would like.  If you are unsure, then the answer is to keep to something very generic in color, design and size.
