| In 1906, Batesville Coffin
Company in Batesville, Indiana was having financial difficulties.
John A. Hillenbrand came to the rescue of this small-town coffin manufacturing
company which had been in existence since 1884. and changed its name to
Batesville Casket Company.
Since its inception, the
company had been employing furniture and cabinet makers to design and engrave
their products which consisted only of hand-made wooden coffins.
Since Hillenbrand purchased the company, he made a number of changes
which are responsible for making it a leader in the funeral services industry.
The company now had
a factory with modern woodworking machinery to create coffins and
Caskets from fine hard woods. Energy was supplied to the
factory by a power plant built by Hillenbrand. The father, John A.,
and his two sons, John W. and George pooled their ideas in an attempt to
develop their company so that it would beat out their competition.
In 1918, Batesville began
the innovative idea of metal casket production and cut back on the production
of their wooden products. Due to various global events, the
company fluctuated between wood and metal and currently offers consumers
their choice of either one.
Some of the other innovations
offered by Batesville include:
-
Memorial Record tube which was
introduced in 1954 and trademarked by the company. This allows positive
identification without the casket having to be opened if this should ever
be required.
-
Memory Safe drawer is another
thoughtful innovation trademarked by the company. Some of their
wooden coffins have a private drawer that can be used by family members
or friends to include messages of love for the deceased.
-
Most Batesville Caskets can
be fitted out with design panels with references to the culture,
hobby, profession or religion of the deceased.
Batesville offers many
options in types of Caskets as well as cremation products for those families
who make that choice.
The company states that their
mission is to provide superior customer service along with superior quality
in all their products. To this end, Batesville Casket Company
issued a Consumer Alert to advise that online retailers who are not licensed
funeral homes are not authorized Batesville dealers. This casket
company strictly limits the sale of its products to licensed funeral directors.
Batesville states they follow this rule because they believe licensed funeral
homes have a better understanding of all the Batesville products and feel
that they adhere to higher standards of community service. Consequently,
the company warns that any Caskets purchased from unauthorized dealers
will void their limited warranty.
